Rewilding Law
The Lifescape Project’s Rewilding Law work focusses on supporting rewilders around the world to understand how the law applies to their activities. We are also working to pursue systemic legal change where needed to support the full potential of rewilding to tackle the biodiversity and climate crises.
Rewilding Law Hub and Rewilding Legal Guidance Notes
In July 2023 we launched our Rewilding Law Hub which is a first of its kind legal resource centre for rewilding.
Working with Rewilding Europe and Rewilding Britain and their networks of rewilders, we have published guidance notes providing an overview of the legal aspects of key topics such as reintroductions, protecting wild land and planning permission. To date, we have published these notes for England & Wales, Scotland, Italy and Portugal, with more jurisdictions on the way.
As our work progresses, we will be sharing our learning and additional resources in the Hub for the benefit of all rewilders.
Read our blog to understand more about our vision and have a look at the Rewilding Law Hub yourself to start using the guidance notes.
Large Herbivores
Large herbivores play a vital role in ecosystem restoration but in the UK, we have lost most of our wild large herbivores.
The Lifescape Project is a founding member of the Large Herbivore Working Group (LHWG) in the UK which has a vision of creating the conditions for large wild herbivores to return to the UK.
Lifescape shares this vision and we are collaborating with other members of the LHWG to understand and work towards overcoming the legal and regulatory challenges to acheiving this objective.
Systemic challenges and test cases
We are continually working with our partners to identify and overcome the systemic legal issues which are inhibiting the impact and extent of rewilding. A big part of this work will be the use of test case projects which are experiencing these barriers, working with them to try to overcome them, whether that be through innovative use and interpretation of existing laws or developing and advocating for changes to the existing legislation and regulatory frameworks.
We will be sharing our learnings and key outcomes through our Rewilding Law Hub.
